ON SOME BRIGHT FUTURE AUTUMN MORNING prose (PROS?) by John Watts

ON SOME BRIGHT FUTURE AUTUMN MORNING—when the sun’s rays aren’t directly in my eyes, and the temperature is ideally hovering somewhere between 75 and 80 degrees, and I’ve eaten a perfectly balanced snack that tastes great and doesn’t weigh me down, and there is no wind to sabotage me, and there are no more than 5 people present as witnesses, and my mind is relaxed and unaware of any kind of pressure, and my jacket is off my shoulders and my shoes fit just right—it will be then—THEN that I finally, once and for all, live up to my potential and let the world in on my little secret—that I am the greatest John Watts type of mid-range jump shooter to ever shoot a baseline jumper since Dr. James Naismith nailed up the first bottomless peach basket. On this day I will make basket after basket with the same consistent motion, with each shot more inspired than the one before. And I will empty my mind of all doubts and negative thoughts and never end my streak—until I am carried away with the Guinness Book of World Record people on the phone confirming what I have done.
So strongly do my dreams still compel me….
And then I can finally retire and never speak of this again.
